Microbiology Department

The Microbiology Department at Azhar Medical Lab provides laboratory investigations for the detection and identification of microorganisms responsible for infectious diseases. The department supports physicians in diagnosing infections and selecting appropriate treatment when microbiological testing is clinically indicated.

Microbiology Services

The department provides investigations including:

  • Bacterial culture
  • Fungal examination and culture
  • Identification of clinically significant microorganisms
  • Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST)
  • Microscopic examination of clinical specimens
  • Direct examination and staining of specimens
  • Detection of pathogenic microorganisms
  • Infection-related laboratory investigations
  • Other specialized microbiological tests according to clinical requirements

Specimens Examined

Depending on the suspected infection, the laboratory may examine:
  • Urine
  • Blood
  • Sputum
  • Stool
  • Wound and pus specimens
  • Throat and nasal swabs
  • Genital and other clinical swabs
  • Body fluids
  • Tissue specimens
  • Other clinical samples according to the requested investigation

Culture & Identification

Microbiological culture allows microorganisms to be grown under appropriate laboratory conditions and subsequently identified using standardized laboratory procedures. Depending on the specimen and suspected infection, cultures may be performed for:
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Respiratory infections
  • Wound and soft-tissue infections
  • Bloodstream infections
  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • Genital infections
  • Other bacterial and fungal infections

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing

When clinically appropriate, antimicrobial susceptibility testing is performed to determine the response of an identified microorganism to selected antimicrobial agents.

This information can help physicians make more informed decisions regarding antimicrobial therapy. Microscopy & Staining Microscopic examination and appropriate staining techniques may be used to support the detection and preliminary identification of microorganisms in clinical specimens. MDepending on the specimen, testing may include:
  • Gram staining
  • Direct microscopic examination
  • Fungal microscopy
  • Other specialized staining procedures when indicated

Laboratory Equipment & Technology

The Microbiology Department is supported by essential microbiology laboratory equipment, including:
  • Laboratory Microscopes
  • Incubators
  • Autoclave / Sterilization Equipment
  • Biological Safety Cabinet, where applicable
  • Culture and specimen-processing equipment
  • Equipment for antimicrobial susceptibility testing
  • Supporting laboratory instruments and consumables

Diagnostic Workflow

Specimen Collection → Sample Reception → Direct Examination → Culture & Incubation → Microorganism Identification → Susceptibility Testing, When Required → Quality Control → Result Verification → Final Report

Quality & Safety

Microbiological testing requires strict specimen handling, contamination control, sterilization, and quality-control procedures. The department follows standardized laboratory practices to support accurate results and maintain appropriate laboratory safety.

Reporting

Microbiology reports may include the detected microorganism, culture findings, and antimicrobial susceptibility results when applicable. Results should be interpreted by the treating physician in conjunction with the patient’s clinical findings.
