Histopathology Department

The Histopathology Department at Azhar Medical Lab provides comprehensive tissue examination and pathological diagnostic services. Tissue samples are carefully processed, prepared, stained, and examined microscopically to support the diagnosis of tumors, cancers, inflammatory conditions, and other diseases.

Services & Diagnostic Investigations

The department provides:

  • Histopathological examination of biopsy specimens
  • Examination of surgical tissue specimens
  • Incisional and excisional biopsy evaluation
  • Examination of tissue samples for suspected tumors and cancers
  • Diagnosis and classification of benign and malignant lesions
  • Assessment of inflammatory and infectious tissue conditions
  • Examination of skin, gastrointestinal, breast, thyroid, lymph node, and other tissue specimen
  • Surgical pathology examination
  • Tissue section preparation for microscopic evaluation
  • Special staining when clinically indicated
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing for selected cases

Common Specimens Examined

Depending on the clinical indication, the department can examine specimens such as:

  • Breast tissue
  • Skin and soft tissue
  • Thyroid tissue
  • Lymph nodes
  • Gastrointestinal biopsies
  • Liver tissue
  • Prostate tissue
  • Uterine and cervical tissue
  • Other biopsy and surgical specimens

Immunohistochemistry (IHC)

For selected tumors and diagnostically challenging cases, Immunohistochemistry can be used to identify specific cellular markers and assist in tumor classification and treatment-related assessment.

Selected markers may include:

  • ER (Estrogen Receptor)
  • PR (Progesterone Receptor)
  • HER2
  • Ki-67
  • Other IHC markers according to the clinical and pathological indication

Laboratory Equipment & Technology

The Histopathology Department is supported by modern tissue-processing and slide-preparation equipment, including:

  • Automatic Tissue Processor – for automated processing and preparation of tissue specimens
  • Automatic Microtome – for producing thin tissue sections for microscopic examination
  • Embedding Station with Cold Plate – for tissue embedding and block preparation
  • Automated Tissue Stainer / Auto Stainer – for standardized staining of tissue sections
  • Microscopes – for detailed microscopic examination of prepared slides
  • Supporting equipment for tissue fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and slide preparation

Diagnostic Workflow

  • Specimen Collection
  • Fixation
  • Tissue Processing
  • Embedding
  • Sectioning
  • Staining
  • Microscopic Examination
  • Pathological Interpretation
  • Final Report

Quality & Accuracy

All histopathology procedures are performed according to standardized laboratory practices, with appropriate quality-control measures throughout specimen processing and slide preparation to support reliable and accurate pathological diagnosis.

Reporting

Following microscopic examination and pathological assessment, a comprehensive pathology report is prepared based on the findings and clinical information provided with the specimen.
