Allergy Testing & Screening
Comprehensive Allergy Testing at Azhar Medical GroupAllergy testing helps identify substances that may trigger allergic reactions and provides important information for accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment planning. At Azhar Medical Group, allergy testing is selected according to the patients symptoms, medical history, age, and suspected allergens.
What Is Allergy Testing?
Allergy testing is a medical evaluation used to determine whether a person is sensitized to specific allergens that may be responsible for symptoms such as:
- Sneezing and runny nose
- Nasal congestion
- Coughing or wheezing
- Itchy or watery eyes
- Skin itching, rash, or hives
- Swelling
- Reactions to certain foods
- Reactions to medicines
- Reactions to insect stings
- Other allergy-related symptoms
A positive allergy test does not always mean that a person will develop symptoms after exposure. Test results should always be interpreted together with the patients medical history and symptoms.
Types of Allergy Tests
Depending on the patients symptoms and clinical situation, different tests may be recommended.
Skin Prick Test (SPT)
The Skin Prick Test is one of the commonly used methods for evaluating immediate allergic sensitization. A small amount of allergen extract is placed on the skin, usually on the forearm or back, and then gently pricked.
- Quick results
- Minimally invasive
- Useful for many IgE-mediated allergies
Specific IgE Blood Test
When skin testing is not suitable or certain medications cannot be stopped, a Specific IgE blood test may be considered. A blood sample is collected and analyzed for IgE antibodies directed against specific allergens.
- Uses only a blood sample
- Helpful when skin testing is difficult
- Useful when medication interference occurs
Intradermal Allergy Testing
In selected cases, an intradermal test may be recommended. A very small amount of allergen is injected just beneath the skin and assessed after a specified period.
- More sensitive than SPT
- Used only when clinically indicated
- Performed under supervision
Which Allergens Can Be Tested?
Depending on the patients symptoms and medical history, testing may include selected allergens such as:
Environmental Allergens
- House dust mites
- Pollens
- Molds
- Animal dander
Food Allergens
- Milk
- Egg
- Wheat
- Peanut
- Tree nuts
- Fish
- Shellfish
- Soy
Insect Allergens
- Stinging insects
Medication Allergies
- Selected drug allergies
The selection of allergens should be based on the patients symptoms and exposure history rather than testing every possible allergen without clinical indication.
When Is Allergy Testing Recommended?
- Recurrent sneezing or allergic rhinitis
- Persistent nasal congestion
- Recurrent itchy or watery eyes
- Suspected allergic asthma
- Recurrent hives or swelling
- Suspected food allergy
- Suspected medication allergy
- Reactions to insect stings
- Symptoms that repeatedly occur after exposure to a particular substance
- Symptoms where identifying a specific allergen would help guide treatment or avoidance
- Symptoms where tracking allergen exposure is important
- Evaluation before consideration of immunotherapy
The decision to test should be made based on the patients clinical history and medical evaluation.
When Should Skin Allergy Testing Be Delayed or Avoided?
Skin testing may not be appropriate in every situation. It may need to be postponed or replaced with another testing method when:
- The patient has extensive eczema or another significant skin condition affecting the testing area.
- The patient is taking medications that significantly interfere with skin-test results and cannot safely stop them.
- There has been a previous serious systemic reaction associated with allergy skin testing.
- The patients medical condition makes skin testing inappropriate at that time.
Some medications, particularly antihistamines, can reduce the skin€™s response and may affect the accuracy of skin testing. The healthcare provider should review the patients medications before testing.
Do You Need to Stop Allergy Medicines Before the Test?
Some antihistamines can interfere with skin allergy testing and may need to be discontinued for a period before the test.
Examples include:
- Cetirizine
- Loratadine
- Fexofenadine
- Diphenhydramine
- Chlorpheniramine
The exact timing depends on the medication and the individual patient. Some medicines may require several days before testing. Patients should not discontinue medication without medical advice.
What Happens During a Skin Prick Test?
- Medical Assessment: The healthcare professional reviews the patients symptoms, medical history, previous allergic reactions, and possible triggers.
- Selection of Allergens: The appropriate allergens are selected according to the patients clinical history.
- Skin Testing: Small amounts of selected allergen extracts are applied to the skin and the skin is gently pricked.
- Observation: The patient remains under observation while the test reactions develop.
- Interpretation: The healthcare professional measures and evaluates the skin reactions and compares them with appropriate controls.
- Medical Recommendation: The results are interpreted together with the patients symptoms and history to determine the next step, which may include avoidance measures, medication, further testing, or consideration of allergy immunotherapy when appropriate.
What Are the Benefits of Allergy Testing?
Identify triggers
Helps determine which allergens may be associated with the patients symptoms.
Support accurate diagnosis
Provides objective information that can support the clinical evaluation.
Guide treatment
Results may help healthcare professionals develop a more appropriate management plan.
Improve prevention
Identifying relevant allergens can help patients reduce unnecessary exposure.
Support immunotherapy
In appropriate patients, clinically relevant allergens help determine whether immunotherapy may be considered.
Personalized care
Provides a clearer basis for ongoing treatment and long-term management.
Are Allergy Tests Completely Accurate?
No diagnostic test is perfect. A test may sometimes produce a false-positive result, meaning the test indicates sensitization even though the patient does not experience symptoms when exposed. A false-negative result can also occur.
For this reason, allergy test results should never be interpreted alone. They must be considered together with the patients symptoms, exposure history, and medical examination.
Is Allergy Testing Safe?
Skin prick testing is generally considered a minimally invasive procedure, and serious reactions are uncommon. However, because allergy testing involves exposure to allergens, testing should be performed by appropriately trained healthcare professionals with suitable medical supervision and the ability to manage an allergic reaction if one occurs.
Why Choose Azhar Medical Group for Allergy Testing?
At Azhar Medical Group, allergy evaluation is approached according to each patients individual symptoms and medical history.
- Professional allergy assessment
- Appropriate selection of allergy tests
- Evaluation of environmental and food-related allergies
- Interpretation of test results
- Personalized medical guidance
- Allergy treatment and management
- Follow-up care
- Allergy immunotherapy for eligible patients
Important Medical Notice
Allergy testing should be performed based on medical indication and interpreted by a qualified healthcare professional. A positive test does not necessarily mean that a patient has a clinical allergy, and a negative test does not always completely exclude an allergic condition. Do not stop prescribed medications before testing unless specifically instructed by your healthcare provider.
